Description

This healthy white rice recipe elevates a simple meal using fresh ginger and turmeric for a bright, earthy aroma and vibrant golden color. It results in fluffy, perfectly cooked grains every time, making it a fast and family-friendly side dish.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups long-grain white rice, rinsed
  • 1.5 cups water
  • 0.75 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • 0.75 teaspoon ground turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 0.25 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped (or parsley)

Instructions

  1. Rinse The Rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold water for about 30 seconds until the water runs completely clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Combine Ingredients: Add the rinsed rice, water, salt, grated fresh ginger, and ground turmeric powder to a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan. Stir gently to incorporate the turmeric evenly.
  3. Cook The Rice: Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Immediately reduce the heat to the lowest setting, cover tightly with a lid, and simmer for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  4. Rest The Rice: After simmering for 15 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat, keeping the lid securely on. Let the rice rest undisturbed for exactly 10 minutes to allow the grains to steam and absorb remaining moisture.
  5. Fluff And Serve: Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice. Drizzle with toasted sesame oil and garnish generously with chopped fresh cilantro before serving.

Notes

Use a heavy-bottomed pot for even heat distribution and prevent scorching. Do not lift the lid during the initial 15 minutes of simmering or the 10-minute resting period. If the rice is still hard after resting, add a tablespoon of water, cover, and steam for another 2 minutes.
