Description
This easy turmeric milk recipe with saffron cardamom foam is a comforting, healthy drink with a beautiful golden hue and enchanting aroma, perfect for winding down a busy evening. It’s a blend of rich spices with a unique, luxurious topping.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole dairy milk (or unsweetened oat milk)
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 0.5 teaspoon ground ginger
- 0.25 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 0.125 teaspoon black pepper
- 5–7 strands saffron threads
- 3–4 whole green cardamom pods (or 0.25 teaspoon ground)
- 1–2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or agave, to taste
Instructions
- Gently Heat Milk Base: In a small saucepan, combine milk, ground turmeric, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, and black pepper. Heat over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally, until hot but not boiling (about 5-7 minutes). The mixture should be steaming, not bubbling vigorously. If it looks like it is getting too hot, simply reduce the heat to prevent scorching.
- Prepare Saffron Cardamom Foam: While the milk heats, gently crush the green cardamom pods using a mortar and pestle, or the back of a spoon. Steep these, along with your saffron threads, in about 0.25 cup (60 ml) of the warm milk (taken from the saucepan) for a few minutes. You will notice the milk taking on a light golden color and a fragrant aroma. For a quick shortcut, use pre-ground cardamom.
- Froth Foam Mixture: Using a hand frother or whisk, vigorously froth the saffron cardamom milk mixture in a small, deep mug until it is light, airy, and visibly foamy (about 1-2 minutes). The foam should hold its shape and smell fragrant.
- Sweeten And Serve: Pour the warm milk into your favorite mug. Stir in your preferred sweetener to taste, ensuring it dissolves completely. Gently spoon the light, fragrant saffron cardamom foam on top of your luxurious turmeric milk. Do not boil the milk at any stage to maintain its best texture and flavor.
Notes
Remember to stir well to prevent spices from settling. Do not boil the milk at any stage to maintain its best texture and flavor. Freshly grated ginger can be used for more zing, and pre-ground cardamom is a quick shortcut. Maple syrup is a top vegan sweetener swap.
