Description
This recipe recreates the iconic Texas Roadhouse Rolls at home, featuring soft, yeasty rolls perfect for sharing and served with a delightful homemade cinnamon butter.
Ingredients
- 4.5–5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 0.5 cup granulated sugar
- 1.5 cups warm milk, 105-115°F (40-46°C)
- 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 0.5 cup powdered sugar
- 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, optional
Instructions
- Activate Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk (1.5 cups, 105-115°F / 40-46°C), granulated sugar (0.5 cup), and active dry yeast (2.25 teaspoons). Stir gently and let sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
- Mix Dough: Stir the melted butter (0.5 cup), large egg (1), and salt (1 teaspoon) into the yeast mixture. Gradually add 4.5 cups of all-purpose flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead steadily for 8-10 minutes until smooth, elastic, and slightly tacky.
- First Rise: Lightly grease a clean bowl with oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning once to coat. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, 60-90 minutes.
- Shape Rolls: Gently punch down the risen dough. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and roll to an even 0.5-inch thickness. Cut into approximately 2-inch squares and place on a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, leaving space for expansion.
- Second Rise: Cover rolls loosely with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Let rise again in a warm spot until puffy, 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) during this time.
- Bake Rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until light golden brown.
- Make Cinnamon Butter: While rolls bake or immediately after, combine softened unsalted butter (1 cup), powdered sugar (0.5 cup), ground cinnamon (1.5 teaspoons), and optional honey/maple syrup (1-2 tablespoons) in a small bowl. Beat until light and fluffy.
- Serve Warm: Brush baked rolls with extra melted butter for shine, or slather generously with the homemade cinnamon butter. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
Ensure your yeast is active by checking for foam; if not, use fresh yeast. Avoid over-kneading to prevent tough rolls. For a gluten-free option, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend with xanthan gum. Dairy-free milk can be used for dairy-free rolls. Store leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
