These tender Spiced Pumpkin Scones with Maple Glaze are a comforting fall treat. Quick to make, they feature classic pumpkin spices and a sweet, pourable topping.
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Pumpkin puree (not pie filling!)
- ½ cup Brown sugar
- ½ cup Cold butter, cut into small pieces
- 1 tbsp Baking powder
- ½ tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp Ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp Ground ginger
- ¼ tsp Ground cloves (or 1 ½ tsp pumpkin pie spice blend)
- ½ cup Heavy cream or buttermilk
- ¼ cup Pure maple syrup
- 1 ½ cups Powdered sugar
- 2–3 tbsp Milk or cream (for glaze)
- ½ tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 1 tsp Molasses (optional, for a richer flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare Oven & Dry Ingredients: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves or pumpkin pie spice), and salt.
- Cut in Cold Butter: Cut in cold butter using a pastry blender, two knives, or your fingertips until pea-sized crumbs form.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk pumpkin puree, heavy cream (or buttermilk), and vanilla extract.
- Mix Dough: Pour wet ingredients into dry, mixing gently with a fork until just combined. Don’t overmix; a shaggy dough is perfect for tender scones!
- Form & Cut Scones: Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead 2-3 times, then pat into an 8-inch disc, about 1-inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges. Arrange on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them.
- Bake Scones: Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Your kitchen will be filled with an irresistible, warm aroma!
- Make Maple Glaze: While scones cool, whisk together powdered sugar, maple syrup, and a splash of milk or cream until smooth. Adjust consistency as needed.
- Glaze & Serve: Drizzle the warm maple glaze over cooled pumpkin scones. Serve immediately for the best taste!
Notes
- Pro Tip for Butter: For speed, pulse cold butter and dry ingredients in a food processor a few times!
- Healthier Option: For slightly healthier scones, reduce sugar by 1/4 cup.
- Dietary Substitutions: Consider a 1:1 gluten-free blend for dietary needs. Dairy-free butter and plant-based milks can be used.
