Description

Creamy ruth chris sweet potato casserole topped with pecan crunch. A Southern-inspired, crowd-pleasing holiday dish.


Ingredients

  • 3 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes (from 3–4 large sweet potatoes or 3 x 15 oz cans, drained)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • â…“ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, lightly toasted
  • â…“ cup unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • Optional: 2–3 tbsp cream cheese or sour cream
  • Optional spices: ½ tsp ground cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg or clove
  • Optional: Mini marshmallows for topping

Instructions

  1. Prep Sweet Potatoes: Boil, bake, or microwave sweet potatoes until fork-tender. Mash until smooth.
  2. Mix Filling: In a large bowl, combine mashed sweet potatoes, sugar, salt, vanilla, eggs, and melted butter. Mix until well blended. Add optional cream cheese and spices if desired.
  3. Prepare Crumble: In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar, flour, toasted pecans, and melted butter. Chill for 15 minutes.
  4. Assemble: Spread sweet potato mixture in a greased 2-quart baking dish. Top evenly with the chilled pecan crumble.
  5. Bake: Bake at 375°F for 25–30 minutes until topping is golden and filling is set. Add marshmallows in last 5–7 minutes if using.
  6. Serve: Let rest 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

  • Use canned yams to save time, but drain well and pat dry.
  • Dish can be made 2 days ahead and refrigerated before baking.
  • Freezes well up to 3 months; reheat at 350°F until hot.
  • To make gluten-free: use oat flour in topping.
  • To make dairy-free: substitute plant butter and almond milk.
