Description

This recipe features incredibly flavorful Charred Patties With Sunset Tomatoes, an easy and hearty grilled burger perfect for busy weeknights and family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef, 80/20 lean
  • 46 burger buns (brioche or potato preferred)
  • 2 large sunset tomatoes (or any ripe, colorful tomato like heirloom)
  • 46 cheese slices (cheddar, provolone, or pepper jack)
  • 1 head green leaf lettuce
  • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
  • 0.5 cup dill pickle slices (120ml)
  • 1 tbsp burger seasoning
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare Patties: Gently mix 1.5 lbs ground beef with 1 tsp kosher salt, 0.5 tsp black pepper, and 1 tbsp burger seasoning. Do not overmix. Form 4-6 uniform, 0.75-inch thick patties, making a shallow thumbprint in the center.
  2. Slice Vegetables: Thinly slice sunset tomatoes, crisp lettuce, and red onions. Set aside, keeping fresh until assembly.
  3. Preheat Grill: Preheat outdoor grill to medium-high (400-450F). Clean and lightly oil the hot grates.
  4. Cook Patties: Place patties on the grill. Cook 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, 6-7 minutes for medium, or 8-9 minutes for well-done. Turn only once. (If patties appear dry, brush lightly with a little oil.)
  5. Melt Cheese and Toast Buns: During the last 2 minutes of cooking, add a cheese slice to each patty to melt. Toast buns on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and warm.
  6. Assemble Burgers: Place a warm, cheesy grilled burger patty onto a toasted bottom bun. Layer high with crisp lettuce, vibrant sunset tomatoes, thin onions, and tangy pickles.

Notes

Avoid overmixing beef; make a thumbprint in patties to prevent bulging. Turn patties only once for char marks. Brush dry patties with oil. For time-saving, use pre-formed patties or pre-sliced cheese. Patties can be cooked ahead for meal prep. Adapt for gluten-free (buns) or low-carb (lettuce wraps). Optional additions: Worcestershire sauce or minced garlic (patties), crispy fried onions.
