Description

This apple danish recipe is a simple secret to flaky, delicious danishes right at home, filling your kitchen with an irresistible aroma of cinnamon and baked apples. It is incredibly convenient and bursting with sweet apple flavor, perfect for a family-friendly breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, approx. 280g
  • 2 medium apples, about 200g diced (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar, 50g
  • 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon, 2.5ml
  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, 14g
  • 1 large egg, for egg wash (whisked with 1 Tbsp water)
  • 0.5 cup powdered sugar, 60g
  • 12 Tbsp milk or cream, 15-30ml
  • 0.5 tsp vanilla extract, 2.5ml

Instructions

  1. Prep Apple Filling: Peel, core, and dice apples into 0.5-inch pieces. Combine with 0.25 cup granulated sugar, 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon, and 1 Tbsp unsalted butter in a small saucepan. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until tender-crisp and fragrant. Cool completely.
  2. Roll Out Puff Pastry: Unroll 1 chilled puff pastry sheet (approx. 10×10 inches) on a lightly floured surface. Cut the sheet into nine 3.3×3.3 inch squares.
  3. Assemble Danishes: Place a spoonful of the cooled apple filling in the center of each pastry square. Fold opposite corners towards the middle, pinching firmly to seal and create an opening for the filling.
  4. Egg Wash and Bake: Brush the pastry edges with an egg wash (prepared by whisking 1 large egg with 1 Tbsp water). Arrange the danishes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, until they are golden brown, puffed, and flaky.
  5. Prepare Glaze: Whisk 0.5 cup powdered sugar with 1-2 Tbsp milk or cream and 0.5 tsp vanilla extract until smooth and drizzly. Drizzle generously over the cooled danishes to create the ribboned glaze.

Notes

Use pre-diced frozen apples (thaw first) as a shortcut. Reduce sugar in the apple filling to 2 Tbsp for a healthier option. Do not overfill pastry squares, and ensure pastry edges are well-sealed by pinching firmly. Avoid overbaking; watch for a golden hue to prevent them from drying out.
