Description

This easy apple cider crockpot recipe transforms simple ingredients into a fragrant, heartwarming beverage. It’s a hands-off slow cooker delight perfect for busy families, holiday hosts, or anyone craving comfort with deep, infused flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon unfiltered apple cider
  • 2 tablespoons loose-leaf smoked black tea
  • 6 whole star anise pods
  • 75 g fresh ginger, thinly sliced
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 large orange, zest removed in wide strips, then juiced
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup, optional
  • 0.25 cup candied ginger coins, thinly sliced (for garnish)
  • fresh orange zest strips (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients in Slow Cooker: Pour 1 gallon unfiltered apple cider into a 5.7-liter (6-quart) slow cooker. Create a spice sachet by placing 2 tablespoons loose-leaf smoked black tea, 6 whole star anise pods, and 75 g thinly sliced fresh ginger into a heat-proof muslin bag or large tea infuser, securing it tightly. Add the prepared spice sachet, 4 cinnamon sticks, wide orange zest strips, and the juice of the orange to the slow cooker with the apple cider.
  2. Slow Cook to Infuse Flavors: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 3-4 hours, or on high for 1.5-2 hours, until the cider is thoroughly warmed and rich flavors are fully infused. Avoid boiling the cider to prevent bitterness. After heating, taste the cider and stir in 60 ml (0.25 cup) maple syrup, adjusting to your preferred sweetness.
  3. Strain and Garnish for Serving: Carefully remove and discard the spice sachet, cinnamon sticks, and wide orange zest strips from the slow cooker. Keep the cider on the warm setting until ready to serve. Ladle the hot cider into individual clear heat-proof mugs, placing one fresh cinnamon stick into each. Float a few 50 g (0.25 cup) thinly sliced candied ginger coins on the surface and drape fresh orange zest over the rim for garnish.

Notes

Do not boil the cider; gentle warming preserves delicate flavors and prevents bitterness. Remember to remove the main spice sachet and zest strips before serving for a smoother, more refined drink. For less sugar, simply omit any added sweeteners like maple syrup and enjoy the natural sweetness of the cider and fruit.
